Lindley Liberal Club Football Section

The football Section began in 1975, it used to be Oakes C.Y.C. Old Boys which was just up the road at the old Oakes Junior School.

The main instigators if I remember correctly in our move were Howard Taylor, Harold Taylor's son, David Ling, Stanley Lings son, Andrew Horsfield and Ian Shaw.

The first team were at the time in the Third Division and the second team were in the Reserve Division Two. The end of season 1978/9 saw both teams promoted. We were relegated at the end of season 1980/81.

The Works League team was started in season 1983/84 and as far as I am aware we are currently the longest serving team with continuous membership.

We were again promoted in 1984/85 and we continued our yo-yo existence for the next few seasons. However, the Second team were champions of Reserve Division Three in 1988/89.

The next highlight was when we won the Groom Cup in season 1989/90; unfortunately we suffered relegation to the Fourth Division in the same season.

At the beginning of season 1995/96 Eric Bennington was appointed coach and we were promoted into Division Three as champions, we were also champions of Division Three the following season and the Works League Team reached the final of the Hoyle Cup. The First Team were eventually promoted to Division One in season 2000/2001. Unfortunately Eric had to resign due to ill health and we were relegated the following season and we have remained in Division Two ever since.

This season 2006/2007 saw the Second Team as Champions of Reserve Division Two and narrowly lose in the final of the Junior Challenge Trophy. The Works team finished in its highest position for many years and the First Team finished mid-table all in all a reasonably good season.
